Excuse-free Living: What’s getting in your way? - Core Confidence

Excuse-free Living: What’s getting in your way?

EXCUSE FREE LIVING

“If it’s important you will find a way, and if it’s not you will find an excuse?”

This can be a throwaway line about one experience or goal, or it can become a way of life.

When we take the time to consider our lives, there are often areas that we are experiencing great success, and of course others that perhaps need a little love.

In Chapter 2 of Core Confidence, we share the ‘Wheel of Life’ process, which helps you get clear on the areas of life where you could focus some attention to ensure you’re both living up to your potential and achieving the fulfilling life experience we all desire.

If you are not achieving what you want in career and life then the most obvious question is: What’s getting in our way?

The likely answer is excuses. Excuses hold us back, whether they are about the decisions and mindset that are keeping us stagnant or about taking responsibility for our behaviours and actions – or lack of.

Excuse-free living is all about truly believing that if you’re committed to something, you will find a way to make it happen, whether it’s improving your financial life, moving forward in your career, giving up a bad habit or bettering your health and personal relationships.

This simple step—believing we can do it—is a crucial part of breaking free from excuses.

Of course, believing in ourselves is not the only step to take! These personal actions and behaviours are also what excuse-free living looks like:

  • Set goals – create a plan to focus the finite energy and resources. A well-defined goal provides long term vision and short-term motivation, bringing our current and future selves together like no other.
  • Be aware of the excuses you tell yourself and understand what the underlying issue is. For most, it’s fear – of failure, embarrassment, making mistakes, change, uncertainty. Being conscious of the issue is the first step to working through it.
  • Take responsibility for the events and circumstances of your life
  • Focus on solutions and opportunities to achieve your goals – ask questions, seek help or outside perspectives from others and try new things to solve a problem
  • Do not compare yourself to others, your own best is all you are trying to achieve (and surpass next time!)

We talk about setting goals and taking action in Chapter 2 of the Core Confidence book and if you’d like to do the Wheel of Life activity to find out where you might need to spend some attention, you’ll find that in there too.
